My knowledge of Sub-Saharan Africa history, both ancient and modern, is just appalling. I only learned about the Biafran war - which resulted in over a million people dead and millions of refugees - when I came across a recipe for Biafran Stew in the Frugal Gourmet cookbook. True, the war ended before I turned 1, but how could I have avoided all references to this genocide before? It's both puzzling and sad.
The recipe in question was given to Jeff Smith (the Frugal gourmet) by a Biafran student of his who had most of his family killed during the war. I felt it was worth making it and indeed remembering, if for a brief moment, all those people who so needlessly died.
