Colonial food, like current American food, was a hopscotch of cuisines. The colonists brought their own recipes from their original countries, adapted them to local ingredients and borrowed from each other's cuisines. Indeed, some of the dishes served at taverns at the time - which were very common in some colonies - seem positively modern. What people ate varied a lot by region and by social class, though meats and fresh vegetables were predominant. As in Europe, lunch (called dinner at the time) was the largest meal of the day, dinner (called supper) could be quite light.My Colonial menu (eaten over a couple of nights) consisted of
