Cape Malay

Yellow Rice with Raisins

Yellow rice is a traditional Cape Malay dish, often served with bobotie or curries. I served it with the former. I didn't find this recipe very flavorful, it probably needs a bit more salt. With so many great pilaf recipes around, I wouldn't bother making it again.

Yellow Rice with Raisins

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. turmeric
  • 2 tsp. butter
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cups boiling water

Instructions

Rinse the rice. Put the rice and the rest of the ingredients in a heavy saucepan, mix well. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to low and simmer until the rice is ready. Remove the cinnamon stick and fluff the rice before serving.
