Lakhmatzioun

Pita bread with Ground Beef and Spices

I'm sorry to say that I did not enjoy this pita recipe. I've had similar dishes in Syria, where they are commonly sold in the street, and I liked them very much - but this one just didn't do it for me. Perhaps it needed more seasoning, I'm not the greatest fan of cumin, and perhaps I should have used more finely ground beef. In any case, I won't be making it again.

Lakhmatzioun

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 3 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, seeds removed, finely chopped
  • 6 Tbsp. parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 15 small pitas

    Instructions

Heat olive oil over medium heat in a medium sauce pan. Add the onion and saute untit translucent. Add the ground beef and saute until cooked through. Remove from the heat, place meat mixture in a bowl and add the garlic, bell pepper, tomatoes and parsley. Mix well and season with the cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper.

Cover each pita with the meat mixture. Place in a grill and cook for 3 minutes or until golden.
