Elizabethan England

Savoury Toasted Cheese

I don't know what the exact problem with this recipe was: whether this just shows that the stereotypes about British food being terrible are true, or whether the British/Elizabethans had a different concept of "butter" and "cream cheese" than we do in America, but the simple fact is that this recipe was terrible. The sauce had no flavor and was nothing but a waste of good cheese. Fortunately, we now have a dog with surprisingly low standards.

The recipe below is for the cheese sauce, I served it over toast but you can (but should not) serve it over asparagus or other vegetables.

Savoury Toasted Cheese

Ingredients

  • 8 oz butter
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 2 oz brie
  • 1/4 tsp. white pepper
  • toasted bread or cooked vegetables

Instructions

Melt butter in a medium size pan over medium heat. Add the cream cheese and the brie. Whisk constantly until combined and creamy. Add the white pepper. Pour over toast or vegetables.
