My mom's side of the family immigrated from Lombardy to Argentina, in the second half of the 19th century. They joined millions of other Italians which brought their food, their customs and their language, and forever changed Argentina's culture and culinary traditions. Argentinians both speak and cook with an Italian accent.
A century of separation, of course, helped both cuisines evolve - but visiting Lombardy in this project meant visiting much of the food I grew up eating at my grandparent's home and even my own - as well as exploring some new dishes. The pasta dishes, for example, were ones I hadn't had before. Making the polenta, which brought me back to my grandfather's dining room, was probably the most emotional part of this journey, which took place around the time my mother passed away. So let me leave this page in memoriam to my mother and her parents, whom I still love so much.
Italian cuisines I've explored so far: Italian, Abruzzese, Calabrian, Campanian, Caprese, Corsican, Emilian-Romagnan, Florentine, Friulian, Italian Renaissance, Italian-American, Lazian, Ligurian, Lombard, Lucanian, Monégasque
