The Hmong are an ancient people who have lived in southern China for at least the last 2,000 years. As Han Chinese started moving into their region in the 18th century, and Manchu dynasties started persecuting them, many Hmong migrated to what is now Laos and Vietnam. More recently, the diaspora has expanded to Thailand and the United States - though there are small Hmong pockets in other countries. As with any ancient people, there are different Hmong groups and subgroups - for my cooking project, I did not differentiate between them.

While the Hmong have retained their own language and many cultural practices, their cuisine is heavily influence by that of the region where they live, they thus lack distinctive Hmong dishes, though they may have their own variations of classic dishes from their region. The dishes I made are family dishes from Hmong in different parts of the world. I had a mix success.
